So how do you get started? A little planning will go a long way. Getting your yard in tip top shape can be a daunting task. Get your basic spring yard work done early so that when the weather warms up, you are ready to plant, and enjoy your time outdoors. If you are tackling this yourself, here is a helpful list of tips to make the most of your time:
Remove Debris– Twigs, plant remains, rocks strewn about? Make every effort to put these items in their proper places. You may consider gently raking leaves away from your landscaping or yard features or even using a leaf blower if there are lots of things scattered about your lawn. Save organic material for your compost pile or compost bin. (Spring is a great time to start a compost bin if you don’t already have one.)
Assess Your Plants- Cut back used up perennials and dead branches to make room for fresh buds and new growth. If you didn’t get to them last fall, pull up old annuals to get soil ready for this year’s flowers. Clean up fallen leaves and debris around plants so that new growth is not smothered and there is a lower risk for possible disease.

Late summer and early fall is the best time of year to control your weeds. When you use a herbicide during this time of year there are two benefits to look forward to:
1) The weeds will not be able to grow as quickly in the spring. Appling an application in fall penetrates into their roots and slows growth during the spring when everything else is rapidly growing.
2) Breaking the cycle with a fall application also targets the weeds that thrive in Michigan’s cool fall temperatures. Targeting both of these types of weeds in the fall will intercept their growth and lead to a beautiful and weed free yard.
When is the best application period? Generally, the best application timeline is early September through October. This time period also varies based upon what weeds you are trying to target.
FUN FACT: Do you have a dandelion problem? Dandelions can still be controlled after multiple light frosts. This means if you miss the window of time listed above, you can still treat later in the fall and be ahead of the game for the following spring.
White clover is also a wide spread issue for many lawns. Applying a broad leaf weed control mixture, perfect for diminishing large patches of clover, makes a difference in what you battle the following year.
All great information right? Not quite sure how to put it into practice? We can help! Controlling weeds is an ongoing process. If you want to enjoy the changing of the seasons without battling with your pesky weeds, leave the work to us. Our team of experts offers a variety of services based upon the severity of your needs. We know what weeds are more prevalent during different seasons and offer specific services based upon the types of weeds you are looking to remove.
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is willing to make an assessment of your situation and come up with a treatment plan that is catered to your needs. Stop worrying about fall and spring weed control and let Artisans Landscaping lend you a hand.
November is upon us! A crucial time for lawn care. Removing your leaves in the fall can be a bit cumbersome and tedious. But, it is essential for the health of your lawn and plants. How’s the raking? Are you using it as child punishment? Do you enjoy spending hours out in your yard battling your leaves? If not, you might want to think about hiring Artisans to help avoid blisters and a sore back.
Helpful Tips For Fall Clean-Up:
Get the weeds OUT!- If you didn’t treat for fall weeds previously in the year, then you are in for a rude awakening. There are some weeds that thrive in the fall. Getting these weeds pulled early, helps to keep them from getting out of control. Properly removing these weeds also helps to negate the battle in the spring. Make it easier on yourself and tackle the weeds, or let your friends at Artisans deal with the pesky buggers.
Can You See Your Grass?- If you can’t see your grass, it’s probably not growing. Plan on removing leaves at least twice, if not more. Too many leaves for long periods of time slows down photosynthesis. This is an important step for the grass to store up energy for the winter and following spring. Properly removing the leaves as they fall, will allow for the grass to breathe. Ahhhhh. Having trouble handling the volume? We can help!
Pruning- Wait until the trees drop their leaves and are dormant. This is a great activity to put on your list for mid- late November through December. You can even do this activity after snowfall.
Add to your Compost Pile
Last month we promised to share with you how your fallen leaves can aid in the protection of your plants…so, here it goes…
Leaves can act as valuable organic matter to your garden, but they need to be doctored up a bit before they are useful. Combine fallen leaves with other grass clippings, vegetable scraps from the kitchen, twigs, egg shells, and other organic items. Keep in a designated space for decomposition. You will reap the benefits the following season, and the nutrients from the combination will do wonders. If you have already been keeping your clippings, this will act as a great insulator for your perennials.
How is your curb appeal? Are you guilty of not picking up your leaves in a timely manner? There is still time! Our professional team is committed to giving you the best service and value. To get your property ready for winter, we offer mulching, weed control, lawn moving, leaf removal, and bed maintenance. Although we are having an uncharacteristically warm start to fall, the beautiful Michigan weather has begun to have nights that dip below 45 degrees. We’ve even had some counties that have already had a frost warning! It’s perfect football weather, and the trees are starting to show their true colors. So, what does that mean for your landscaping that you’ve worked so hard to maintain through the summer? Look no further! Artisans Landscaping, (989) 662-0500, can help keep your yard looking sharp throughout the fall season.
This time of year is a very important time to keep your bed maintenance in check. If you are tackling the yard work on your own, we’ve compiled an easy to follow list of things to assist you in keeping up with bed maintenance:
Falling Leaves-As leaves fall, stay ahead of the game and remove them regularly. Too many leaves left in beds can cause fungal disease to perennials.
Moisture– As we start to see cooler nights, make sure that you are keeping the ground moist. Moisture will help to help your trees, shrubs, and evergreens stay healthy and avoid frost damage.
Planting– It’s not too early to think spring! October and early November are great times to plant spring bulbs. When you plant in the fall, your blooms will be waiting for you come springtime. Hardy bulbs like tulips, daffodil, and hyacinths are able to survive the winter right in the ground. Make sure to remove any bulbs that may not be able to handle our harsh Michigan winters. These flowers include gladiolus, dahlias, and canna.
Mulch– To help add insulation; spring bulbs, shrubs and perennials should be protected by a new layer of mulch. (Check back next month on tips for making your own mulch from your fallen leaves!)
Pruning– It seems natural to prune in fall when you are getting everything ready for winter. Resist the urge! Just leave your pruning tools in the shed, and re-visit this activity when the trees are dormant in the cooler months and less susceptible to fungi. If you have any dead branches that you need to remove, you can do that at any time.
If you find you are too busy transporting kids to their activities, and doing other household things, please contact us at (989) 662-0500. We are more than happy to make sure that your beds, trees, and shrubs, are being well maintained. We care about your plants!
DON’T FORGET: Check back next month for helpful tips for fall clean-up and how to use your leaves to aid in protection for your plants.
What is the purpose of a fertilizer? Fertilizer is the best way to add the necessary nutrients that turf grass needs to attain and keep a desirable quality lawn. In many cases the soil isn’t providing everything the lawn needs, and a fertilizer can provide the missing link.
Three things to take into consideration when applying a fertilizer:
Quality Product– If you have a high mileage car you don’t put any old oil in it do you? A runner doesn’t buy tennis shoes that will fall apart quickly, right? The same goes for choosing a quality product for your lawn. If you want to have results with longevity, it is important to choose a lawn fertilizer that has a balance of fast and controlled release sources. As well as the proper balance of nutrients.
The Right Amount– Nitrogen is important, but only in proper amounts. When applied correctly, it’s what makes grass look its greenest. If there is too little, slow growth and yellowing can occur. On the flip side, if there is too much, there can be excessive shoot and leaf growth and poor tolerance to cold Michigan winters.
The Right Time– For our Michigan climate, fertilizing in early may, the teens of September, and around Halloween are the three times of year that are suggested. FUN FACT: If you are only able to fertilize once a year, a fall feeding is BEST!
Is your grass at your residential or commercial property having a hard time maintaining its green color? We can evaluate what your needs might be with just one visit to your property. We offer expert service at great pricing! Please contact us today and let the friendly experts help with any questions.
It’s that time of year where we all want to be outside enjoying as much of the Michigan summer that we can. It’s the time of year filled with ball games, summer camps, vacations, and other activities we enjoy. With all of these fun activities, it’s the hardest time of year to find time to keep up on the yard.
As you are pulling into your driveway you look across your lawn and realize it should have already been cut, but don’t know when you will have time…
Monday? I have a late work meeting.
Tuesday? T-ball.
Wednesday? I have a haircut after work.
Thursday? No, we have grandma’s birthday.
Friday? We promised the kids we would go to the zoo.
Saturday? I was hoping we were going to the art fair, but maybe that’s the only day to cut the lawn. I don’t want Mrs. White saying something to us again!
Do your children ooo and ahhh about the “dandelion field” that graces your front yard?
Does your neighbor Mrs. White makes comments about the length of the grass?
It sounds like it’s time to regain a little bit of control over your busy summer schedule. How about using a local trusted source to help manage your time and sanity?
With Artisans Landscaping lawn services, you will be able to enjoy more of your time doing the things that you love this summer. Our experienced lawn care team will make sure that your property is treated as if it were our own. The professional and dependable crew can help you make your lawn the best one on the street, and help answer “When are we going to cut the grass”? Our free estimate is a great place to start. Call us today at 989-662-0500 to schedule a time for us to come help you take control of your busy summer schedule.
What is your favorite summer activity that you would rather be doing then mowing, trimming, or raking your yard? If you are looking for one less thing to do around the house so that you can enjoy your Michigan summers, Artisans can help!
